Stuart McKillop has been producing, recording, mixing and mastering records for over 15 years. Working in almost every genre of music available on planet earth, McKillop is well equipped to explore sounds from the past and create sounds of the future. He started his career learning from producer Jesse Gander at Rec-Age Recorders, eventually moving to The Hive Creative Labs with Gander and Hive owner Colin Stewart. In 2011 McKillop left The Hive to pursue Rain City Recorders, opening a beautiful room in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. Jesse Gander teamed back up with Rain City Recorders in 2013 and now the duo have moved Rain City to Studio One at Greenhouse. Stuart's focus has turned to mixing and mastering with several hundred records under his belt.

I’m thrilled to be mastering at Railtown Mastering in Vancouver B.C. Railtown Mastering is located in the historic Gastown area of Vancouver. Situated on the corner of Main and Alexander, one block from the waterfront. The studio is owned by mastering engineer Andrew Spindor. It was designed and built by Fred Gilpin and William Barker of FGA Acoustics, and architect/designer Brooke Dedrick.
Mastering is the final stage before the manufacturing process. Your last chance to make some impact. My goal is to make your mixes sound deep with detail and depth while keeping a balanced tone. I've been mastering records for over half my life already, I have the experience to master your record to suit your artistic and genre specific needs. From death metal to jazz, hip-hop and everything in between, i've mastered it! I'm going to make your record sound better, not just louder.
MASTERING FOR DIGITAL AND CD
For CD mastering we will be delivering you a DDP (Disc Description Protocol) file set. This will include CD Text and ISRC codes.
We also deliver 24 Bit masters for upload to streaming sites and iTunes
MASTERING FOR VINYL
Vinyl masters are delivered as one stereo 24 bit high resolution WAV file for each side. There are physical limitations to vinyl and care must be taken when creating a pre-master to allow for transparent vinyl cutting. Excessive loudness and high end are two things you must avoid in your mix. Excessive high end will result in distortion when cut to vinyl.
The following are the maximum recommended times for vinyl. Side lengths vary depending on pressing plant. Shorter sides can result in louder records and an increase in fidelity.
33 RPM 12" : 18 to 20 minutes maximum (up to 24 mins if you must)
45 RPM 12" : 14 to 15.5 minutes maximum
33 RPM 7": 6 to 7 minutes maximum
45 RPM 7": 5 to 6 minutes maximum
33 RPM 10": 14 to 15.5 minutes maximum
45 RPM 10" 10.5 to 11.5 minutes maximum
PREPARING YOUR MIXES FOR MASTERING
When finalizing your mixes, please make sure to leave at least 3 to 6db of headroom. Please remove any limiting, clipping and dither from your mix bus. Limiting or clipping your mix bus can greatly decrease the ability to master your project without unwanted artifacts. Control your dynamics but please leave your transients intact.
I'm all for wild and crazy artistic mixes, if you have doubts about your mix bus processing please send a version with and without the processing. I can use your processing as a guide to what your artistically trying to achieve.
Please deliver your mixes at the bit rate and sample rate you have recorded at or mixed down to. Please do not up or down sample your mixes. .WAV or .AIFF are accepted file types. Please do not send MP3's or any other compressed files.
Mixing generally takes 1 day per song to complete with a couple short tweak sessions to complete the small details. Raw sounding genres and live band recordings wont take as long to mix and can usually be completed in two or three days. I mix under two different scenarios.
Unattended mixing is $300 per song with tweaks done at no additional charge. If the band is locally available I will do a final tweaks session with the band in attendance.
Attended mixing is $500 per day with tweaks costing an additional hourly rate. Attended mixing takes place in Rain City Recorders Studio A.
Preparing your files for mixing
Please export consolidated 24 bit files at whatever sample rate you have recorded at.
Make sure all files are consolidated to the same start time of 0:00.000
Clearly label your tracks or files! Audio 1, Audio 2, Audio 3 are not acceptable file names.
Please have all performance editing completed before sending in for mixing. If your project requires performance editing please contact us ahead of time to arrange this for you.
Send DI tracks in addition to the amp tracks for guitars and bass if available.
Convert all midi tracks to audio and consolidate to the song start time.
Please complete all vocal tuning and editing before sending in your files for mixing. If you need vocal tuning or editing please contact us ahead of time to arrange this for you.
If your vocals are all screaming, please make sure all your layers are edited and aligned before sending in your files. If you need editing or aligning to your screaming vocals please contact us to arrange this for you.
Once you have all your tracks consolidated and exported, please put each song in a folder with the name of the song and the bpm if applicable.
When all songs have been exported please place all song folders into a single folder with the band name and zip the project.

$90 per song for 2-5 songs
$80 per song for 6 or more songs
